Daily Myrrh has no advertising, no analytics, and no tracking. An account is optional. If you make one, we keep your email address, the circles you are in, and your reading progress, so they come with you to a new phone. Your prayers, journal, and everything else you write for yourself stay on your device. Three optional features send content off your device only when you use them: writing down your prayers (their words), spoken-prayer transcription (your voice, so your prayer can be written down), and reading someone’s words aloud in the app’s voice (their words, so they can be spoken). Neither is used for advertising, profiling, or training.
You can use Daily Myrrh without an account. You need one only to begin or join a prayer circle, and to subscribe. You can sign in with Apple, with Google, or with a six-digit code we send to your email address.
If you make an account, our server keeps:
We use your email address only to sign you in and, if you turn it on, to send news about Daily Myrrh. Every news email has a link to stop them. We never sell your address or share it with advertisers. Sign-in codes and news are sent through Cloudflare, which runs our server.
Some things are kept only on your device, with or without an account:
We cannot see any of this. If you delete the app, it is removed with it. Signing in on a new phone does not bring it back. To keep it, use Save a copy in Settings: it puts these words in a file that you keep wherever you choose, and Bring back a copy adds them to the app on a new phone. The file never passes through our server. Confession preparation goes in only if you turn it on. Settings also shows what is kept where.
A circle is a small room of people praying for one another. What you share in a circle is stored on our server so its members can read it: the name you chose for that circle, the prayers you ask, notes you write back, lines you offer to its weekly chronicle, and, in parish circles, homilies a parish posts (as audio, with their written text). Each week a chronicle is written for the circle from what its members shared, using Anthropic’s Claude.
Recorded prayers. In a family circle you can record the Our Father, the Hail Mary and the Glory Be, for the people in your circle to hear at bedtime. You are told this plainly, in the app, before your first recording. Each recording is sent through our server to Deepgram only to check that it says the prayer, and Deepgram does not keep it. A recording that says the prayer is stored on our server, and only the circle’s current members can play it. It is never public, never used to train or imitate anyone’s voice, and no one is told who has listened. You can delete your recordings at any time. Leaving the circle deletes them, and deleting your account removes them within a day.
Anyone in a circle can report what does not belong there and block a person. We read every report.
When you ask the app to write down or shape a prayer from the Prayer Book, your words are transmitted to our server, which forwards them to Anthropic (the maker of Claude) to set them down, subject to Anthropic’s privacy policy. The same applies to the words of anything you pray or say aloud: a prayer for your Prayer Book is sent to be shaped into a written prayer, and a request you say aloud for someone is sent to be set down in a sentence or two. Your own prayer for someone you pray for is sent with only their name (never what they asked) to be set down as a prayer. Each time you choose Plainer words, Shape it, or Say more, the words are sent again: Say more sends your prayer, what you first said, and your answers, to ask one question or to weave your answer in. Anthropic does not keep them, and your prayers are kept only on your device.
If you never use the Prayer Book’s writing features or Say it for someone you are praying for, none of your prayers are sent to Anthropic.
When you select a line in one of the books and ask what it means, the app sends the words you selected and the paragraphs of the book around them to our server, which forwards them to Anthropic (the maker of Claude) to write a short explanation, subject to Anthropic’s privacy policy. You are asked before the first time. Only the book’s own text is sent, never anything you have written. We keep the explanation on our server, without your name or device, so that the next reader who asks about the same line receives the same one; a one-way hash of your device identifier and network address is kept for a day or two, only to limit how many explanations can be asked for in a day. You can withdraw that permission in Settings, and the app asks again before it sends anything more.
Earlier versions of the app also had an Ask companion and, later, an About sheet on readings and prayers. If you used them, your question was sent the same way with the words of the page you were on (and, for Ask, your first name if you had given one). Neither is in the current version, and our server kept nothing from them.
If you choose to pray aloud, the app records your prayer so it can be written down for your Prayer Book. You are told this plainly, in the app, before your first recording. When your device is online, the recording is sent through our server to Deepgram, a speech-to-text service, solely to transcribe it, subject to Deepgram’s privacy policy. The audio passes through for transcription and is then deleted; neither we nor the app stores your recording (a prayer you choose to record for your circle is the one exception, above), and the transcript is sent once to Anthropic to be set down, as above, and is otherwise kept only on your device.
If you prefer, you can switch to on-device transcription in Settings, and the app uses it automatically when you are offline. On-device transcription happens entirely on your phone (using an on-device model, or Apple’s speech recognition subject to Apple’s privacy terms), and the recording never leaves the device. The written words are still sent once to Anthropic to be set down, as above.
When you pray aloud a prayer someone asked of you (a private prayer you kept, or a prayer in a circle), and your own prayer for them, the app can read the words in its own voice rather than your phone's. You are asked first, in the app. Once you agree, the words are sent through our server to DeepInfra, an AI voice service, when you keep a private prayer or change your own prayer for someone, or pray their words aloud, solely to turn them into speech, subject to DeepInfra’s privacy policy. Our server does not store the words or the audio. The audio is kept only on your phone, so the prayer can be read again without sending anything, and deleting a private prayer, or removing your own words, deletes its audio.
You can turn this off in Settings (Their words read aloud), which deletes every such recording from your phone; your phone’s own voice then reads their words, and nothing is sent. The Church’s prayers and Scripture are recorded ahead of time and send nothing about you.
Reminders are local notifications scheduled on your device. Nothing about them leaves your phone.
We use no advertising, analytics, or tracking services. The third parties that receive anything from the app are: Apple (Sign in with Apple, if you use it, and speech recognition in some on-device configurations), Google (Sign in with Google, if you use it), Cloudflare (which runs our server, stores circles and accounts, and sends sign-in emails), Anthropic (prayer texts, circle chronicles, lines of the books you ask to have explained, and questions from earlier versions), Deepgram (spoken-prayer audio, when you pray aloud while online), and DeepInfra (the words of prayers someone asked of you, when you have chosen to hear them in the app’s voice), each solely to provide the feature.
If you listen to audiobooks or podcasts, your device streams that audio directly from its source (the Internet Archive, or the podcast’s own publisher), exactly as any podcast app does. We send them nothing about you, and podcast feeds are fetched through our server without any information about you attached.
You can delete your account at any time in Settings, under Delete account. This removes from our server your account and email address, your synced reading, your place in every circle, and what you shared in them. A circle you began passes to its longest-standing member, or is deleted if no one else is in it. If you signed in with Apple, we also tell Apple to end Daily Myrrh’s access.
What is on your phone stays until you delete the app. A subscription is billed by Apple and is cancelled in your Apple account, not by deleting your Daily Myrrh account. You can also ask us to delete your account by writing to us.
Daily Myrrh is suitable for all ages and works fully without an account. If you believe a child has made an account, write to us and we will delete it.
